The healthcare landscape is in constant flux, demanding high adaptability and strategic thinking from anesthesia professionals. With the growing demand for anesthesia services, shifts in workforce dynamics and ever-evolving regulations, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAAs) and Anesthesiologists need to stay informed and proactive to be successful and effective.

Anesthesia on the Rise

The market for CRNAs is projected to grow by nearly 38% by 2032, significantly outpacing the average growth rate for other professions. Approximately 57,000 CRNAs are employed across the U.S. at hospitals, outpatient care centers, physicians’ offices and specialty hospitals. In rural counties across the country, CRNAs represent more than 80% of anesthesia providers.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the number of Anesthesiologist positions is expected to increase by 3% from 2022 to 2032, adding approximately 1,100 jobs over the decade and aligning with the average growth for all professions.

Why is anesthesia such a growing field? Evolving healthcare policies emphasizing accessibility and quality care, as well as an aging population, are contributing factors to this expansion. Advancements in medical technology such as ultrasound-guided procedures are also helping to transform the field and create new opportunities for Anesthesiologists.

Pay attention to these four healthcare trends as you navigate the market, advance your career and improve patient care.

Increased Healthcare Expenditure

Technological advances, increased demands and higher labor costs continue to raise healthcare expenses, affecting reimbursement rates and operational budgets across the industry.

For anesthesia professionals, this could mean increased pressure to maximize efficiency while maintaining high-quality patient care. Additionally, as healthcare organizations seek to manage costs, anesthesia groups may face stricter budget constraints, requiring them to optimize staffing models.

Consolidation of Healthcare Systems

Hospitals and healthcare facilities are increasingly merging to form larger systems in hopes of enhancing efficiency, reducing costs and expanding service offerings. This could potentially lead to fewer independent practices and more employment opportunities with larger healthcare organizations. While this may provide more job security and resources, it could also reduce negotiating power for salaries and limit job flexibility.

Shift to Value-Based Care

Healthcare is steadily moving towards outcome-based payment models, where providers are reimbursed based on patient outcomes rather than service volume. The goal is to place more emphasis on quality care and cost-effective services. For Anesthesiologists, CRNAs and CAAs, this approach prioritizes quality patient care, wellness and improved efficiency.

Growth of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs)

ASCs are playing an increasingly vital role in delivering surgical care, offering cost-effective, high-quality alternatives to hospital-based procedures. As demand for minimally invasive surgeries grows, anesthesia professionals are finding more opportunities in these outpatient settings.

With increased demand in anesthesia, medical professionals should pay attention to these broader trends — and how they might directly impact you.

Burnout

Burnout in anesthesia is real. A recent study published in the journal, Anesthesiology, revealed a significant increase in burnout among Anesthesiologists in the two years following the pandemic. 59.2% of Anesthesiologists reported experiencing burnout in 2022, an incredible rise from 10.8% in 2020.

Staffing with locum tenens physicians not only presents a valuable opportunity to address facility and patient needs efficiently, but it has also been proven to address and reduce burnout. Almost 70% of respondents agreed that adequate staffing would be helpful to address burnout, as would improve workplace morale or culture (55.9%), increased compensation (53.5%), reduced weekly hours (52.8%), increased schedule flexibility (51.7%) and improved support from leadership (51.3%).

By reducing workload and providing much-needed relief, leveraging locums helps distribute patient care responsibilities more evenly, allowing full-time physicians to maintain a healthier work-life balance.

High Pay

Anesthesiology continues to be a highly lucrative specialty for clinicians to pursue. According to our own research and findings, annually, Anesthesiologists’ average job salary was reported as $527,872, CAAs as $224,278 and CRNAs as $260,251.

Continued Demand

With many physician Anesthesiologists retiring and ongoing workforce shortages, the demand for anesthesia professionals remains high and is expected to grow. In 2023, nearly 8,500 CRNA students enrolled in 133 accredited nurse anesthesia programs. Additionally, there are more than 4,000 active CAAs in the nation and 23 CAA Programs in the United States.

When regarding location, CAAs are authorized to practice in 23 jurisdictions—19 states, Washington, DC, and the US Territory of Guam. CAAs may also practice at any Veterans Affairs facility in all 50 states.

What Does this Mean for You?

These evolving trends are changing the landscape of patient care, creating both challenges and opportunities for you.

With the consolidation of healthcare systems and rising costs, employment structures may be changing. Clinicians will need to be flexible and adapt to the changes ahead. For those who do, the rise of ASCs and the shift to value-based care present new career paths and opportunities for job security.

The industry — and the specialty — are changing quickly. By educating yourself on the current trends and future predictions, you can facilitate long-term career growth and success.
